Welcome to our blog where you’ll discover elopement planning resources, as well as beautiful galleries from real weddings!
When it comes to picking an elopement suit, there are a ton of considerations for both men and women! Suits are awesome for elopements, and anyone can rock them! Here’s a detailed guide for what you should consider when picking out the perfect elopement suit for your special day.
If you read our blog about elopement dresses, you know that we love when couples don’t care about how dirty their attire gets! If you’re having an adventurous elopement, chances are you are going to get a bit dirty. You might be hiking, exploring, climbing, swimming, or dancing in the desert! So, it’s best to remember that and be open to just having a good time, instead of worrying about your clothes. With that in mind, here are some good fabric options for the outdoors: wool and cotton. Both wool and cotton are great fabrics for suits. They allow for breathability and functionality.
When looking for a suit, remember that you’re going to get it dirty most likely. So, you might not want to get an extremely expensive suit. But also, even if your suit gets a little dirty, it’s not like it can’t be washed. We recommend getting a higher quality suit that is made of good materials simply because you can clean the suit afterwards. It’s better to invest in something that is high quality rather than getting something that is made cheaply. That way, you can save your suit and wear it in the future! Maybe to another wedding, at your vow renewal years down the road, or to a special event.
We also want you to keep in mind that both men and women can wear suits! It’s your day and you deserve to dress EXACTLY how you want. So, we wanted to include a ton of different suit stores that offer suits for both men and women!
Indochino – Custom affordable suits
JCPenney – Affordable suit options
Little Black Tux – Women’s tuxedos
ASOS – Suits for men and women
Express – Suits for men and women
Another idea is if you want to wear a jumpsuit! Lulus and BHLDN have amazing bridal jumpsuits that you should definitely check out!
One of the best tips we can give you is to pick a suit that compliments your location. For example, if you’re eloping in a warm environment like the deserts of Utah, we would suggest going with a cooler toned suit. You could opt for a light grey, navy blue, forest green, or a deep purple. When eloping in a cooler environment, like the mountains and alpine lakes in Glacier National Park, you should try to go for a warmer colored suit. Instead of greens, blues, and purples, you could go for a maroon, rusty orange, or tan. Colors like black and white go with basically any environment, too!
Also keep in mind the lighting of your elopement location. If the environment is darker (like a dense forest location), maybe go for a lighter colored suit. Or if your location is wide open (like the beach), so it’s brighter, you could go for a darker suit that will stand out against the background.
But the biggest thing is just to make sure that you love your location and your suit! You deserve to elope wherever you want and wear whatever you want! It’s YOUR day. So, choose what is going to make you feel amazing.
Spring: In the springtime, it often fluctuates between warmer and cooler days. So, it’s important to layer in order to stay warm in the springtime! Definitely have a heavier jacket just in case. You are also going to want to consider the potential for it to be windy or rainy. We recommend lightweight fabrics for underneath layers, but warmer layers on top. That way, you can peel off the warm layers if you want to!
Summer: For just about anywhere, the summer is going to definitely be very warm. Of course, still bring a jacket because temperatures drop after sunset. But you can opt for more lightweight and airy fabrics so that you stay cool and don’t sweat too much. This will definitely help you to be more comfortable. A lot of men and women often just wear a button up shirt and nice pants in the summer! You can go for a button up long sleeve shirt or short sleeve shirt depending on how hot it is where you are eloping. You can fancy it up with some suspenders or a nice tie! This is a great and simple option, but you will still look incredible.
Fall: It is often getting cooler in the fall, with the exception of some warmer days. So, again, layering is going to be your best friend. But we also recommend heavier fabrics in order to sty warm. You can lean towards fabrics like wool, tweed, or cashmere for autumn elopements.
Winter: In the winter, layers are actually very essential. It’s really important to stay warm and be comfortable on your elopement day. That’s why we suggest heavier fabrics and layers. Even if it isn’t snowy at your location, temperatures can still drop significantly. Also make sure to bring hand and body warmers!
Ties are awesome for accessorizing your suit. You can go for a skinny tie, a wider tie, a patterned tie, solid color tie, or a bowtie. Your options are endless! This is also a great opportunity to spice up your look or try something new! You can match your tie to the floral colors or you can have it complement the environment.
Suspenders are both functional and they look awesome! Suspenders help keep your pants up or they can just be for show. We love the traditional skinny suspenders, but it’s super fun to have them be a different color, too! This is a great option for men and women who want to just wear a dress shirt instead of a jacket or blazer. It looks really nice to add suspendrs to your plain shirt.
If your suit have a pocket, you can add a pocket square that compliments your elopement colors (either with your partner’s outfit, the florals, or the environment). You could also match your pocket square to your tie or your suspenders!
We love boutonnières! They are so gorgeous and they always look really nice with the bridal bouquet (if you have one). They are often placed on the left side of yor blazer, just above your heart. But if you want to wear a dress shirt and still have a boutonnière, don’t fret! You totally can. We recommend that you use a lightweight boutonnière to add directly to a dress shirt. Here’s a YouTube video on how to do that! The boutonnière below was made by Melissa Boothe.
Lastly, an epic accessory are your shoes! If you’re adventuring, you want to have the right shoes for the activities that you’ll be doing. Think hiking boots or Chacos. You can even be fancy and match your shoes to your suit!
