Let's Get Started!

When to elope in Washington by season

Washington looks different in every season, and each one offers a completely different elopement experience. Here’s what to expect throughout the year!

Spring (April to May)

Perfect for couples who:

  • Want fewer crowds and more privacy
  • Love moody vibes and changing weather (think Twilight vibes in the Hoh Rainforest)
  • Would prefer cooler temps and are okay with cloudy weather
  • Are most excited about getting married in lush forests, along the coast, or by raging waterfalls/rivers

Things to know:

  • Mountain locations will still have a lot of snow into late June!
  • Some roads and trails may not be accessible yet
  • Weather can change very quickly throughout the day

Spring in Washington is so underrated! If you’re drawn to foggy backdrops, forests, full waterfalls, and an intimate, slow-paced day, this season offers a beautifully understated elopement experience, especially at lower elevations.

Lush greenery, moody weather, and quiet vibes.

Early Summer (June)

Perfect for couples who:

  • Want mild weather without peak summer crowds
  • Love wildflowers and fresh alpine scenery
  • Are planning an adventure in Olympic National Park or want to snowshoe at Mount Rainier
  • Want more daylight for exploring

Things to know:

  • Snow will still be covering places like Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, North Cascades, Olympic mountains, etc.
  • Mountain access depends on winter conditions and you can expect to still need snowshoes or micro-spikes at higher elevations
  • June weather can still surprise you

June can be a sweet spot for Washington elopements if you're okay with snow! It offers a mix of accessibility and l privacy with longer days, fresh landscapes, and just enough unpredictability to keep things feeling adventurous.

Longer days, blooming landscapes, and more adventures!

Peak Summer (July to mid-September)

Perfect for couples who:

  • Dream of mountain peaks, alpine lakes, and high-elevation views
  • Want the most location options across the state
  • Prefer warmer, more predictable weather
  • Are okay sharing popular spots with others

Things to know:

  • This is the busiest time of year in most locations
  • Lodging can be tricky if you don't book in advance
  • Wildfire smoke can occasionally impact visibility

Summer in Washington offers the most freedom when it comes to locations and timelines. With thoughtful planning and timing, it’s possible to experience iconic landscapes while still finding quiet, meaningful moments.

Golden light, alpine access, and iconic Washington views

Autumn (October to November)

Perfect for couples who:

  • Love autumn colors, fog, and dramatic light
  • Want fewer crowds after summer fades
  • Are drawn to cozy, intentional elopement days
  • Don’t mind cooler temps, potential for snow, or shorter days

Things to know:

  • Weather becomes less predictable as fall goes on
  • Some mountain areas close with early snow (for example: you can't get a special use permit for Sunrise, Mt Rainier after September)
  • Daylight hours decrease quickly

Fall elopements in Washington feel more grounded and intimate. The colors are rich, the pace slows, and the landscapes take on a moodier energy (perfect PNW vibes). This is a great time of year if you love the colors and aren't stressed about road closures or unpredictable weather.

Crisp air, rich colors, and a quieter pace

Winter (December to March)

Perfect for couples who:

  • Love snow-covered scenery and winter vibes
  • Have experience with snow/cold temps (not required, but winter in WA isn't for everyone)
  • Want the most privacy and solitude
  • Are open to cold weather and flexible plans
  • Prefer a cozy, intentional experience over a packed itinerary

Things to know:

  • Snow and road closures limit access in a lot of areas
  • Shorter daylight hours affect timelines
  • Planning requires flexibility and backup options

Winter elopements in Washington are not for everyone. While they require more intention and flexibility, they also offer a rare kind of quiet. And getting to experience the winter wonderland is truly one-of-a-kind.

"There isn’t enough amazing things I can say about Hannah and Adam. They were so amazing to work with!

Me and my fiancé can be awkward in front of the camera and they made us feel so comfortable. They captured our day exactly how we imagined!

They were flexible when we had to change plans and made our day everything we hoped for.

The pictures and video both came out exactly how we wanted and they captured memories from our day that I will cherish forever. I am truly so so grateful to have chosen them to capture our day.

They are incredible!! I can’t recommend them enough!!"

- Hannah & Tim

"I came across VTE‘s profile on Instagram and immediately knew I wanted them for our engagement photos. We were really fortunate that Hannah & Adam were going to be near Ruby Beach, which is where we wanted our pictures taken. It all came together so effortlessly, from booking the session to the day of!

Our shoot was so fun, easy and relaxed. I honestly didn’t realize how quickly 2hrs had gone by. It felt like we were just hanging at the beach with our friend! I can’t say this enough, Hannah is incredibly talented, sweet and personable. Truly a master of her craft, and it’s obvious, I mean just look at these photos! :)

Hannah was so awesome with guiding us for certain shots & ultimately captured some of my most favorite moments. I am in love with our photos, they are true representations of us and I can’t help but look at them literally every day!

After our session we received some sneak peeks and I was in complete awe! The pictures were stunning but the best part was how excited Hannah was about them! I was equally excited and couldn’t wait to see the full gallery- which was also delivered quickly! The whole experience was just perfect, I'm so happy that we found VTE!!"

- Jen & Nate

“I reached out to Hannah and quickly received a response back. We had a zoom call to get to know each other and to answer any questions we may have had, Hannah and Adam seemed kind and passionate about their career! After that call, I knew I wanted to work with them.

I explained to the couple that we have never been to the area before and didn't know what to expect. Hannah then later sent multiple itineraries with time lines, maps, scenery pictures, places to stay, hairdressers, make-up artist, local eateries, bakeries, flower shops, and more! Hannah literally did all the hard work for us even though it was out of her job scope! Also, Hannah would check-in and FaceTime from time to time to make sure all wedding items were handled and if she could assist in anyway (freaking angel!).

Once the big day arrived and we finally met Hannah and Adam, they were easy to work with and made us feel comfortable in front of the cameras. After the day ended, we said our goodbyes and best of lucks. The next day Hannah sent "sneak peek" pictures and we're truly blown away! We were more than happy with our pictures! A couple weeks later we received our full galley and it just kept getting better! I was more than pleased with VTE service and their work, now my next challenge is picking the best ones to frame around the house!

THANK YOU VTE, you're truly the BEST IN THE BUSINESS!"

- Katie & Caden

“Hannah and Adam were so incredible!! They were (thankfully) this first vendor we booked for our elopement which made everything so easy! They helped us with so many things that they didn’t have to ( including vendor recs, putting together the schedule for day of, permitting and marriage license, etc) and also delivered INCREDIBLE photos and videos.

These two are the friendliest most helpful team and helped us create the perfect elopement day. If I could give them 1,000 stars I would"

- Lauren + John

"Hannah and Adam were an integral part of making our day amazing! From helping to plan, suggesting and finding the best venue/vantage point (even if it included a little bit more hiking), packing lists and more they ensured our day would be great.

The day was so much fun and stress free. At no point felt that we were 'posed' or too focused on photos/video, the experience was clearly their priority. Our small group was impressed with how professional and skilled they each are in their craft and how much we enjoyed their presence.

The experience of our day far exceeded my expectations, and the results of our photos and video are absolutely jaw-dropping amazing. We love every single photo and our video captures our spirt and humor so well.

We are so happy that in going a non-traditional route we had a dependable team in our corner and that the memories created will certainly last a lifetime."

- Paige & Devon

some kind words from kind people

Eloping in Washington
frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year to elope in WA?

Springtime in Washington usually lasts from April to the middle of June, and it’s a very rainy season here. In the mountains, you’ll still find a lot of snow, and the average temperature is usually between 40-60 degrees. In areas closer to sea level, you’ll start to see a lot of green and new growth!

Summer is the best time for adventures in the mountains! There is still snow at high elevations in June, however, the summer heat has usually taken a hold by the middle of the month. Hiking, backpacking, and water-centered elopements are IDEAL during the summer.

Our favorite season for elopements in Washington is fall. The middle of September to the beginning of October is the best time to see the fall colors in Mount Rainier and the North Cascades!

The winter months in Washington are between November and March. The mountains are a winter wonderland during this time, and it’s great for skiing and snowboarding adventures! If you want to avoid the snow in the winter, head to the coast!

What do I need to legally elope in WA?

After you’ve chosen your date and your ceremony location, it’s important to make sure you get the legal things taken care of. Don’t worry, we’ll help you with this!

Special Use Permits
In most National and State Parks in Washington, a Special Use Permit is required in order for you to have an elopement ceremony. This ranges from around $50 to $250.

Officiant + Witnesses
Your wedding needs to be solemnized in Washington, meaning that someone who is ordained is required to officiate your legal marriage. You are also required to have 2 people over the age of 18 sign as witnesses (hey, that can be us).

Marriage License
You can get a Washington State Marriage License at any County Auditor’s office regardless of whether or not you are a resident of Washington. There are 39 different Washington Counties, and each county will vary on pricing, but it is usually around $60. Both partners must be present and you must show valid photo IDs. A Washington Marriage License is valid for 60 days. There is typically a three-day waiting period, meaning that you have to apply for a license at least 3 days before your elopement.

What day of the week is best to elope in WA?

We always recommend a weekday if you want to avoid the crowds, and have a more private elopement. We also recommend the shoulder seasons (spring and fall), and avoiding any holidays or long weekends!

Where should I stay in WA?

You have a lot of options when it comes to accommodations! You can rent a hotel, stay at a lodge, camp, book an Airbnb/VRBO, rent an RV, etc. There are tons of fun ideas! Once you’ve chosen your elopement location, we can help recommend more specific lodging accommodations.

What transportation options are available?

Depending on where you’re eloping, the best place to fly into would likely be the SeaTac airport. We definitely recommend renting a car if you’re eloping anywhere outside of Seattle. There are a lot of different companies and sites that you can rent a car from, such as Kayak, Sixt, CarRentals, and Avis. It’s much easier to get around with a rental car, and it gives you more freedom to explore!
